Funnels and cleanouts (aka traps, catchers, or pits) are an effective way to help stop dirt and debris from clogging your home’s perimeter drainage system. The kicker – though – is that not all houses need to have funnels and cleanouts installed.
If you live in an area with little to no tree coverage – whether on your property – or adjacent properties – then you are not a good candidate for funnels and cleanouts. If – however – you live in an area surrounded by trees – whether on your property – or in adjacent properties – then you may be a candidate for funnels and cleanout boxes.
Funnels – or fast flow funnels – are installed at the point where the downpipe meets the gutter. The outlet hole is effectively widened by up to 500% allowing and dirt and debris to fall straight through – rather than get trapped at the top of your downpipe.
Having installed the funnel – the dirt and debris is then allowed to flow freely down the downpipe – where it is caught by the cleanout (and you really shouldn’t install funnels without cleanouts). You can then scoop out the dirt and debris – and dispose of it as necessary. This ensures the dirt and debris does not eventually wind up clogging up your perimeter drainage system.
Once your perimeter drainage clogs – you could be introuble as water then can pool around your home’s foundation – leading to floods.
For what they are worth – you should consider adding funnels and cleanouts to yoru home – whether as a retrofit – or during a new gutter installation. However – do not pay for something you may not need. If you are unsure if your need new funnels and cleanouts – ask a professionally trained gutter installation estimator.
One good company to have on your iPhone’s (or Blackberry’s) speed dial is that of Dynamic Gutters & Exteriors Ltd. Give them a call and ask them to send over an estimator – to provide you with a free, written estimate on having new funnels and cleanouts installed on your home.
