No matter how long we live in Vancouver, we’re still surprised when it rains in June. Perhaps you stepped outside and noted your gutters you’ve been ignoring since March are dripping when the latest bout of JUNEuary struck. Well, this article is for you. Here are a few reasons you should repair your gutters now rather than wait until the mad dash before November rains return.
Structural Damage Caused By Unrepaired Gutters
Most believe that gutters are simply a nice trim on their home, similar to adding racing stripes to a car, but few give thought to just how important they are to the structure of your home. Your gutters have a direct effect on your framing, your roof, your foundation, basement, landscaping, any metal construction materials, sealants, exterior paint, windows and even walk-ways around your home. Yes, gutters if left unrepaired or un-replaced, can have drastic and detrimental effects on the longevity of your home.
When gutters start to drip or over-flow they get a trademarked “tiger-stripe” effect. This is a tell-tail sign that your gutters are no longer working, and likely causing all kinds of other structural problems as well. This problem is not only cosmetic but structurally unsound. Cracks often form in ceilings, paint begins to peel, and foundations begin to leak, all of which can lead to more expensive repairs as you attempt to fix the damage from leaky gutters that were left unattended for too long.
Damage to Yours and Your Family’s Health
It’s no secret that moisture in a home where it’s not supposed to be is bad. Excessive moisture can, and will lead to mildew and mold developing. The adverse health caused by mold and mildew is well known on the west coast with more than a few homes being condemned because of it. If you have young children or older ones in your home, these are even more susceptible to mold and mildew growth and often attacks them with respiratory issues and eventually medical treatment is often required. Water leaks from gutters are not always the cause of this, but a surprising amount of time they are.
Landscaping And Erosion Issues
While we don’t live in a desert, soil erosion does still take place. No your garden won’t wash away, but if you’re like most in Vancouver who love their gardens; you’ve spent a tremendous amount of time and money cultivating that garden and lawn, why would you let the rain wash away your precious top-soil? Not to mention the muddy build up, and walkways covered with dirt and mud – basically, leaky gutters make for more effort in upkeep in your garden, and possibly having to hire a landscaper to fix a muddy mess.
Keep Unpleasant Smells Where They Belong
As already mentioned: moisture leads to mold and mildew build up, which in turn lead to that tell-tale musty smell of many homes on the west coast. This not only smells gross, it ruins furniture, bedding, and clothes. What’s more, that boggy marsh that’s growing outside in your lawn (see landscape and erosion above) is a pool for all sorts of nasty things to grow and cultivate in. Enough said: get those gutters fixed!
