Power washing is one of our favorite summer jobs. Exterior maintenance is a big part of our business here at Dynamic, and when it’s time to throw that big outdoor shindig, you will want the deck to be looking its absolute best. Power washing is a really great way to clean an outdoor surface quickly, but there are a few tips that every Do-It-Yourselfer should know.
How Much Power = Power Washing?
A power washer with 1500 PSI (pounds per square inch) will be more than enough to quickly clean an outdoor surface, but it could also be enough to damage wood or composite decking. You want to take the dirt off, not the stain.
Start in an area with low visibility, and hold the nozzle farther back. Bring it towards the deck surface slowly. Once you are satisfied with the pressure, try to maintain the same distance between the deck surface and nozzle tip for the duration of the wash.
You Still Need A Brush
Washing the outside of a building, it’s tempting to let a power washer handle the whole gig. Let’s face it, power tools are way more fun than soaping up a brush and getting on your hands and knees. The fact is, a soft bristled nylon brush is still the best way to clean your deck. You can’t wash dishes by holding them under the tap, and you can’t wash a deck just by rinsing it.
Beware of Chemicals
Always read the manufacturer’s instructions when you apply cleaning agents. Some agents use bleaches, while others use specific chemicals that will react with natural wood. It’s important to know exactly what you’re using, and how safe it is for your deck, and for you as well.
On that note, be sure to wear a suitable work attire. Safety glasses are extremely recommended whenever you’re using chemicals on the deck. Power washing corners can cause backspray very easily, and getting splashed in the eye with bleach is a good way to ruin a weekend.
Rinse, Soap Up, Rinse again
That’s about it for washing the deck. Follow the manufacturers recommended instructions, and you should have a sparkling outdoor deck in no time.
Of course, if you’re not a Do-It-Yourselfer you can always call Dynamic, and we’ll have it ready for that summer deck party in no time.
